For the sixth attempt, the illustrator imagined Megan, a one-of-a-kind creature known as a Mer-cat — part cat on top, part mermaid below — whose most defining trait is her absolute love for bubble tea, a trendy drink beloved even by modern-day mermaids. What began as a simple playful sketch of a Mer-cat sipping boba quickly sparked a much bigger idea when the illustrator started seeing the pearls in the cup not just as toppings, but as Boba Dancers — tiny cabaret performers full of rhythm and personality. That one lighthearted joke blossomed into a creative concept that finally felt right. After five failed attempts with Finn & Freya, Brent & Brair, Rocky & Rowena, Future & Forever, and the Moon and Star, Megan and her Boba Dancers are the characters the illustrator has chosen to carry forward into IT educational content — with the hope that readers will enjoy learning about IT while being entertained by cabaret-style dancing and a colorful celebration of international dance cultures along the way.
